declares Hindi in the Devanagari script
as the official
language. Hindi is also enumerated as one of the twenty-two
languages of the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, which entitles
it to representation on the Official Language Commission. Hindi
is also the main language in many states of India such as Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh,
Uttaranchal/ Uttarakhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Himachal
Pradesh. It is spoken by more than 437 million people in the world. The other
dialects of Hindi are Brajbhasha, Bundeli, Awadhi, Marwari, Maithili, and
Bhojpuri, to name only a few. It
was in the 10th century that authentic Hindi poetry took its form and since then
it has been constantly modified. History of Hindi literature as a whole can be
divided into four stages: Adikal (the Early Period), Bhaktikal (the Devotional
Period), Ritikal (the Scholastic Period) and Adhunikkal (the Modern Period).
Hindi stands third in the list of most widely
spoken languages in the world: 'As
per the research conducted by 'World Languages department' in New York, Hindi
language stands third, just after English and Chinese, in the list of most
widely spoken languages in the world. Hindi is used as a spoken language right
from Nepal, Kabul-Kandahar (Afghanistan) till Dhaka (Bangladesh). Hindi is the
commercial language of Mauritius and Fiji. A 'World Hindi summit' was
also conducted' in which the lead was taken by those countries in which Hindi
is spoken.
Khasi is an Austro-Asiatic language spoken primarily in Meghalaya state in India by the Khasi people. Khasi is part of the Khasi-Khmuic

which is found in east-central India.
